Introduction

Around this time of the year, the Education Ministry requests all schools to organize extra co-curriculum activities for form 3 students after their PMR examination, so that they could  invest their time on noteworthy activities and use their talents to acquire new skills before the year end’s vacation.

Five schools in Miri invited the HLS to take part in the program for the 15 year-olds and our team went to –

The talk on “Human Life is Precious”, focused on the miraculous development of the pre-born baby from fertilization to birth, was to instill in the young that every human life starts at the union of his or her father’s sperm and mother’s egg. Despite the condition he or she inherits from the time of conception, every human being is a priceless, unrepeatable and unique gift of God.

The illustration on the remarkable story of Nick Vujicic- the wonderful and beautiful man without limbs captured the audience’s hearts and posed a challenge to the mind. His mind blowing achievements in spite of the many setbacks motivated the young minds to think beyond what he or she does not have and works with what he or she already has.

The other activity organized was the group discussion on current moral issues in real life situations. Here students learned that the value and dignity of the human person is paramount in dealing with moral issues like abortion and euthanasia.

Where schools were more generous with their time; the HLS team brought  the teens to the subject of Relationship- to create an awareness where  1) every human being is made to relate, 2) relationships with parents and siblings are still very relevant even though the tendency to declare independency grows with one’s age 3) Responsibility, Accountability, Respect and Trust are important elements to work on in a relationship, and 4) say “No” to negative peer pressure is good for the whole person and for those to whom one relates. This was to reinforce the young minds on the importance of relationships with parents, relatives, siblings, teachers and school friends and also training grounds to learn the virtues in life in order to make wise choices with regards to friends and goals in life.
